لما كان ما تركه الإمام الحسين عليه السلام قد نقله المؤرخون وأهل الأخبار مبعثراً منثوراً هنا وهناك في كتب التأريخ والسير والفضائل لزم أن يجمع في الكتاب ويصنف وفقاً لموضوعاته ويفسر ما صعب معرفته وبعد معناه على القراء لكي ينتفع به الشباب ويستقي منه من أراد أن يرد مع أصحاب الحسين عليه السلام. ولهذا اعتنى الشيخ كريم الزريجي بجمع روائع كلام الإمام الحسين من خطب ورسائل وحكم ونظمها في كتابه هذا مصنفاً إياه على ثلاثة أقسام لكي يكون سهل المتناول لكل قارئ، قريب المأخذ، شيّق المطالعة، وزيادة في الفائدة ضمن المؤلف كتابه فهارس علمية كاشفة لمواضيع كتابه، وترجمات مختصرة لما ورد ذكره في الكتاب من أسماء.
