يجمع هذا الكتاب نص محاضرات ألقاه الفيلسوف المسيحي "يوسف بيبر" في شهر آب سنة 1966 في إطار "أسابيع زالسبر الجامعية" النمسا. وهي جميعها تأتي تحت موضوع الرجاء والتاريخ. وفيما يلي ذكر لأهم النقاط التي تحدث عنها في محاضراته: كانط: ماذا يجوز لي أن أرجو؟، تفسير الاستعمال اللغوي، الخيبة كدافع للرجاء، الحدث التاريخي وغير التاريخي، الحرية والقرار، رجاء الشهيدن تجربة الخذلان تجاه التاريخ، براهين فلسفة التقدّم المثالانية (الإيديالية)، فقدان بنية المعنى الشاملة، تفجير الفكر التطوري وما هو عظيم عند تيار دي شردان، التحدّي الكامن في الإيمان بنوّة موحاة عن التاريخ، يكون كلّ شيء ضلالاً إن لم تستقم الصورة الكاملة التي هي موضوع الإيمان، الكلام الأخير للنبوّة المعادية: سماء جديدة، أرض جديدة، المائدة الكبرى و"الرجاء الضمني".
