بين لعبة الحياة ولعبة النرد يبدو صوت إسماعيل مروة مختبئاً وراء صمته وهو يراقب بظله يجلس على مقعد عتيق في مقهى الشرق الأوسط وحيداً مع أحجاره البيضاء يلعب وحيداً.. أنا ألعب بشرف، وما زالت على هذه الطاولة منذ زمن بعيد لأنني ألعب بشرف، وكل الذين ألعب معهم يهزمونني مع أنني أمهر وأقوى وأقدم، لأنهم لا يلعبون بشرف..."
همهمات مبهمة تداخلت مع بعضها واختلطت بدخان الأراجيل والسجائر المتصاعد من الأفواه راح ينصت إلى الحوارات الساخنة التي تدور على ألسنة رواد المقهى يجلس وحيداً بعد أن خابت أحلامه كأحلام كثيرين من أبناء الوطن، ليس لشيء، فقط لأنهم شرفاء، هو شخص يرفض أن يغش حتى في لعبة النرد لذلك صنع نداً له، "بت لا العب النرد مع أحد، لا ألعبه إلا وحدي مع نفسي التي تسمح لي أن أفوز عليها، مع أنها قادرة على أن تهزمني عشرات المرات في اليوم لكنها لا تفعل..."
في هذا الفضاء الروائي تدور بقية قصص المجموعة وهي تسجل هموم الناس العاديين وخيباتهم في تحقيق ما يصبون إليه، لأنه وبكل بساطة لا مكان في هذه الأوطان لأكثر من لاعب، فاللاعب واحد دوماً "هو الذي يقذف الأحجار، يحركها، ينتصر، يفرض الخسارة فرضاً أما غير ذلك فلا..."
