لم يعد التربية الصحية مقصورة على تزويد الأفراد بالمعلومات والحقائق الصحية أو نشرها، لأن التزود بالمعلومة وحدها لا يكفي، بل تعدت ذلك إلى تغيير السلوكات الصحية السلبية إلى الإيجابية.
تعدت الوسائل المتبعة في التربية الصحية مرحلة الاعتماد على وسائل الإعلام من صحف وكتيبات وإذاعة وتلفاز، وتجاوزتها إلى مرحلة تنظيم المجتمع والمواجهة المدعومة بوسائل الإعلام، وذلك بأن يلتقي المثقف الصحي المتعلم ويوجهه.
فيما يخص العلاقة بين المثقف الصحي والمريض، أو أنه يستخدم التوجيه الجمعي، أي مخاطبة فئات المجتمع عن طريق، المحاضرات، الندوات، النقاشات في أسس الرعاية الصحية، وأسس الوقاية، بهدف تحقيق الأهداف الآتية: تغيير مفاهيم الأهل وقيمنهم واتجاهاتهم نحو الصحة والمرض، حيث الناس على الإفادة من الجهود التي تنظمها الجهات الصحية من أجل صحتهم كمراكز رعاية الأم والطفل، ومراكز تطعيم الأطفال. جعل الصحة غاية وهدفاً يسعى المواطنون لتحقيقه.
ولقد أعد هذا الكتاب حسب الخطة الدراسية الموحدة للجامعات الأردنية، التي تم إقرارها حديثاً في تخصص تربية الطفل.
وتركز هذه الخطة على: خصائص النمو الجسمي والحركي والحسي للطفل والتعرف على أدوات تسجيله، عوامل البيئة والوراثة وأثرها على نمو الطفل في المجالات الجسمية والحس-الحركي، التعرف على أمراض الطفولة وأساليب الكشف عنها والوقاية منها والعناية وبالطفل، المطاعيم المطلوبة للطفل ودورها في وقاية الطفل مع مراعاة شروط الأمن والسلامة، والتغذية ودورها في صحة الطفل، والإسعافات الأولية.
