لأنه كان واثقاً من استحالة إجراء أي تغييرات جديدة بعد مرور كل تلك السنين، فإن إحساسا بالشماتة وصل حد النشوة قد طغى عليه.
كانت جالسة قبالته تماماً وقد عبرت ملامحها عن عجز وخيبة لم يتمكن من مغالبة إحساسه بالنصر، ولكنه كبح ابتسامة كادت أن ترتسم على وجهه. تأملها وهو يتململ في مقعده ثم تنحنح وأطلق بعض التنهدات. نهض باتجاه المطبخ، تناول كأسس ماء وعاد إلى الحجرة، كانت لا تزال ساهمة وقد تسمرت نظراتها عند زاوية واحدة. لم يكن ذلك مألوفاً بالنسبة لامرأة متوثبة متقدة الحماس دائمة الحركة مثلها.
كثيراً ما حاول ثنيها عن الإفراط في العمل. وقد حدث بينهما أكثر من شجار حول هذا الأمر بالذات، خصوصاً عندما كانت تقع، بين فترة وأخرى، فريسة المرض، ويأتي تشخيص الطبيب ليؤكد أنها تنهك نفسها بشكل مبالغ فيه، وليوصيها بضرورة أن تمنح نفسها شيئاً من الراحة.
