عندما نحاول التفكير في مفهوم مجرد مثل مفهوم "الثقافة"، لا يمكن التفكير فيه إلا من خلال مقابلته لمفاهيم تدخل معه في علاقات يكتسب منها معناه ودلالته، لا في حقلي اللغة والفكر فقط، بل في سياق الحياة الاجتماعية للبشر أيضاً.
تمثل هذه العلاقات لأول وهلة أمام الذهن في صيغة "ثنائيات" ولكن هذه العلاقة لن تكون ممكنة، إلا بحضور حد ثالث، يبقى مضمراً يبنهما، هو الحداثة.
...ولم تظهر كلمة "ثقافة"، وكلمة "أيديولوجيا"، ولم تظهر فكرة "الطبيعة" بمفهومها الوضعي العقلاني الرياضي والتجريبي، أم بمفهومها الفلسفي والحقوقي والإنساني، إلا في سياق تكون الحداثة في أوروبا بكل ما تتضمنه الحداثة من نزعة أنوارية إنسانية وزمنية، التي لا تعني شيئاً غير مكونات أساسية من مكونات الحداثة.
وكما الثقافة والأيديولوجيا والطبيعة، يصدق الموضوع على النخبة الثقافية والمثقف والمثقفين التي ظهرت لتدل على ظواهر اجتماعية جديدة.
