يُقال أنّ المرأة هي أعظم إختراع بشري، كونها أتاحت للإنسان لأول مرة أن يرى ملامح نفسه بنفسه، ويتعرف على هيئته وشكله دونما الإعتماد على وصف الآخرين له، وقياساً على ذلك يمكن القول أن إختراع آلة التصوير الفوتوغرافي، التي تعتمد في عملها على المرأة وما تعكسه من ضوء، لا يقل أهمية وعظمة.
وأليست هي التي تجسد الأحداث وتجمدها في لحظة زمنية معينة بكل أبطالها وظروفها ومواقعها من خلال صورة سيُفنى أصحابها، وستنمحى مواقعها، وستتبدل ظروفها، لكنها ستظل وحدها الباقية والشاهدة على وطر مضى؟...
وفي هذا العمل المتواضع، الذي يعتمد بصفة رئيسية على الصورة، حاول قدر الإمكان أن أعثر على صور تغطي كافة جوانب الحياة في المنطقة الشرقية خلال سنوات الثلاثينات من القرن العشرين والعقود الأربعة التالية لها.
لذا، فإن متصفح الكتاب سيجده وقد احتوى على صور شاملة للمدن، وأخرى لأعمال شركة أرامكو الرائدة وما إضطلعت به من مهام حيوية في بدايات نشاطها.
هذا إضافة إلى مجموعة من الصور لمظاهر العمران والنشاط التجاري ورواده الأوائل، ووسائل المواصلات المتنوعة، ودور العلم وطلبتها، ومصادر التثقيف والتسلية القديمة، وبعض الأسماء متنوعة الجذور والخلفيات التي مرت في تاريخ المنطقة الشرقية من تجار وأدباء وصحفيين ورياضيين وغيرهم.
أما التعليقات المصاحبة للصور فقد تعمدت التوسع فيها قدر الإمكان، مركزاً على الأسماء والمواقع والتواريخ الدقيقة، وذلك بهدف إعطاء المتصفح للكتاب فكرة شاملة عن مختلف مناحي الحياة في مدن منطقتنا الشرقية الحبيبة.
