هذا كتاب نفيس لم يدرك قيمته وفوائده السنية إلا من وقف عليه وقوف المستفيد الذي يهمه أمر تقويم التراث ومعرفة دخائره ونفائسه. ولن يُعرف مكانه السيد الألوسي من العلم وإدراكه لحقيقة العلم وكيف ينبغي أن يصار إليه من لم يطل درس هذا السفر الغني، ذلك أن تصانيفه الأخرى على كثرتها لا تعطي القارئ ما يعطيه هذا العلق النفيس. إن مادة " الكتاب " ترمي إلى " معرفة أحوال العرب " و " أحوال العرب القدامى " أشتات كثيرة تاريخية. غير أن هذه المادة التاريخية تندرج في تاريخ الغرب وأصولهم في مجتمعاتهم القديمة في مواطنهم المختلفة. وهذه المادة التاريخية تشتمل على قدر كاف من المادة الجغرافية. ثم إن هذه المادة التاريخية غير بعيدة عن المادة الأدبية واللغوية. وهي كذلك متصلة أشد الإتصال بالحضارة القديمة العربية في مسار بها الواسعة التي تشتمل على ما ندعوه في عصرنا بـ " الحالة الإجتماعية "، فأنت تقف في هذا " العلق النفيس " على معارف العرب وعاداتهم وممارستهم وأديانهم. وقد يذهب بك الظن إلى أن السيد الألوسي أراد أن يكرم العرب وينتصر لهم، فهو يبرز للقارئ الصحف المشرقة من تاريخهم المجيد. قد يذهب القارئ إلى هذا، ولكنه ما إن يباشر إستقراء مادته إستقراءً كافياً يدرك أن السيد الألوسي مؤرخ أمين وقف على المحاسن والمساوئ فأشار إلى مفاخر العرب كما أشار إلى ما لا يليق من ممارستهم مما أثبت في مصادر التاريخ والأدب. ومن هنا كان " بلوغ الأرب " مصدراً لطالب المعرفة التاريخية من مؤرخ وأديب ولغوي، وعالم في الإجتماع، وآخر ممن يضطلع بعلم الإنسان أو ما ندعوه بـ " الأنثربولوجي ".
