للإمام "أحمد بن حنبل" مذهب مستقل في الفقه له أصول وقواعد معروفة من اجتهاده وقد يوافق اجتهاده وقوله اجتهاد وقول غيره ممن سبقه من الفقهاء، وله مفردات فقهية انفرد بها عن غيره من الفقهاء، جمعها عدة أئمة. إلى جانب ذلك فقد انتهى للإمام احمد علم الصحابة والتابعين واجتمع له ما لم يجتمع لغيره من العلماء. ومن هنا قال عنه الإمام الحافظ ابن حجر:"إنه لم يحظ أحد بسنة المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم، غير الإمام أحمد"، وهذه منقبة امتاز بها عن سائر فقهاء الأمة وكان أعلم الناس بمذهب الصحابة والتابعين.
ويعد كتاب "تهذيب الأجوبة" للإمام أبى عبد الله الحسن بن حامد الحنبلي" من أوائل ما كتب في أصول مذهب الإمام "أحمد" ونظراً لما لهذا الكتاب من أهمية عملية في مفهم أصول مذهب إمام أهل السنة "احمد بن حنبل" فقد عنى بتحقيقه "صبحي السامرائي" وتجلى عمله بضبط النص، وإكمال بعض السقط في النسخة، وتخريج الأحاديث الواردة فيه، كما ترجم لبعض الإعلام وأسماء الرواة الذين تكلم عنهم الإمام أحمد.
