عموماً يجد كافافي "جماله الكلي" في أماكن لا ينتظر الكثيرون هذا، منها. والذي يهمنا، هو أنه وجد الجمال الكلي، وأنه وجد في الوقت نفسه نوعاً من الحقيقة، ذات العلاقة الوثيقة بالعالم الحديث. كافافي منتبه إلى كل أنواع التعقيد، لكن هذا لايقوده إلى الهيستيريا، والمبالغة، أو إعطاء أهمية زائدة. إن أسلوبه الهادئ، واختياره موضوعه، يمثلان تماماً، عبقريته التي تتقبل الحياة بدون إفراط في الأوهام. وهو في عملية التقبل هذه، غيّر إلى حد ما، ماكان قبلاً. إنه لم يأخذ وصف عالماً، حسب... بل لقد خلق واكتشف عالماً. يحوي الكتاب على مئة وعشرين قصيدة صاغتها أيدي كافافي الذي كان يعيش في الإسكندرية والذي اتبع سبلاً مختلفةً تماماً، إن منابع إلهامه الرئيسة كانت مسارب التاريخ القديم، وما يبدو لمعظم الناس شؤون حب فاضحة. ومع أنه يعي بعمق بهاء التراث الإغريقي ومداه، إلا أن مخيلته تجد موضوعاتها ليس عند هوميروس أو عصر بركليس، وإنما في التآلف الهيلينستي للحضارات والأجناس، في مدن كالإسكندرية وأنطاكية، حيث يشكل الإغرقي واليهودي والوثني والمسيحي والفيلسوف والقسيس والبربري، إنموذجاً معقداً، وبعيداً البعد كله، عن الإنموذج البركليسي.
