يسعى المؤلف في هذا البحث إلى تحليل قضية من أخطر القضايا التي شغلت الفكر الربي الحديث - قضية الترقي أو التقدم - كما تبلرّت في أعمال أكثر المفكرين العرب تجسيداً لوجود وعي ذاتي أصيل فاعل في التاريخ.
وقد يبدو لأول وهلة أن هذه القضية ليست إلا واحدة من قضايا كثيرة يحفل بها هذا الفكر وتتفاوت في خطورتها وجسامتها، لكن الحقيقة هي أن مسألة الترقي ربما تكون المسألة الوحيدة التي تستقطب تجليات الفكر العربي الحديث كافةً وتثوي وراء جل الفعاليات النظرية العلمية التي حملت المثقفين العرب، على تباين مواردهم ومقاصدهم، على أن يسهموا في عمليات الهدم والبناء في العالم العربي الحديث.
وتطمع هذه الدراسة في أن تسد فراغاً لم يسده أحد من قبل، كما تتطلع إلى أن تقدم فهماً لهذا الفكر أقرب إلى الدقة والأمانة، ولقد حرص المؤلف في هذا البحث على التعلق بثلاثة أمور: أولها إحياء أعمال عدد من المفكرين العرب المسلمين الذين أهملتهم الدراسات الحديثة بالإجمال إهمالاً لا يغتفر، ثانيها توسيع دائرة البحث الجغرافية بحيث تحتضن مفكري المشرق العربي والمغرب العربي على حد سواء، بالقدر الذي يسمح به الموضوع الذي عليه مدار الدراسة، ثالثها الهجر المنهجي للطريقة التشريحية الباردة في التعامل مع الثقافة العربية الإسلامية.
