هذا الكتاب نفيس للأصمعي طبع قبل مئة عام من الإبل التي لها أثر كبير في حياة العربي، فهي التي تمده باللبن، وتنقله من موضع إلى آخر، حاملة ما لايستطيع غيرها من أثقال، وتهبه لحومها وشحومها وجلودها وأوبارها، وتحفظ له الماء في كرشها إن نفذ منه الشراب فإضطرته الحاجة إلى البحث عنه في جوف ناقته، ومن المعروف عند العرب أنها تحتمل العطش ثمانية عشر يوماً. لكل هذا سمي العربي ناقته: المال. ولا عجب أن كانت الناقة معجزة النبي العربي صالح عليه السلام. وأشاد القرآن الكريم بالإبل، وأبان عظم شأنها وعجيب خلقها، قال تعالى: { أفلا ينظرون إلى الإبل كيف خلقت }. وللإمارات العربية عناية خاصة بالإبل، وقد دفعني هذا إلى إحياء هذا الكتاب تلبية لرغبة الشيخ أبي عبد الرحمن بن أحمد الغرير. وقد ذكرت أسماء المؤلفين في الإبل، وترجمت لإيجاز للأصمعي، وأحصيت شيوخه، وتلاميذه، ومؤلفاته، ولم أشر في هذا الإحصاء إلى المصادر التي ذكرت ذلك، عن قصد، لأنه مما يؤسف عليه أن قسماً من الباحثين أغار على ما أحصيت في كتب أخرى أنفردت بذكرها، من غير إشارة إلى ذلك.
