وقد طاف المؤلف بأبعاد شخصية الإمام علي منذ ولادته ونشأته واستشهاده فضلاً عن مراحل نشوئه وارتقائه ووقف على حاشية من آرائه في الحكم وسياسة الأمة. وغاية المؤلف تجلية حقيقة أن الله تباركت نعماؤه قد شرع لعباده ديناً ونهج لهم دولة ووضع لهما قانوناً ونظاماً فأنزل وحيد على محمد فكان صلى الله عليه وسلم النذير البشير، وقد قيض الله للمسلمين من بعد الرسول من سار على هديه وهداه وكان علي رضي الله عنه أحد هؤلاء الأصحاب الذين حملوا الرسالة على عاتقهم فرضي الله عنهم ورضوا عنه.
