"قف، أصغ، احفظ، اشهد، والخطأ أما أنك لا تقف، أو إذا وقفت فلا تصغي، أو إذا وقفت وأصغيت فلا تحفظ أو إذا وقفت وأصغيت وحفظت فلا تشهد (...) إذا شاهدت الحق وعاينته ولم تشهد له، فكأنك لم تشاهده ولم تره، معرفة الحق في أي حقل أو نطاق تستدعي التعبير عنه، وإلا كان العارف به خائناً له (...) الشهادة للحق تقتضي قسطاً غير عادي من الجرأة والإقدام، وهذان من أندر الأمور اليوم. الجو مشحون بالضغط والإرهاب، والغالب في المقابل هو روح المساومة والتساهل الرخيص، هو المراءاة والنفاق".
ست عشرة سنة من الحرب عصفت بنا جميعاً، وقد قررت ألا أكون "خائناً أو مرائياً أو منافقاً" هناك حقيقة ليست ملكي، عرفتها، عشت فيها وعايشتها، وسأشهد لها لكي لا ننسى، فتكون خطيئتنا مميتة، ولكي لا تتكرر هذه الخطيئة فتمسي جريمة لا تغتفر...
سأشهد لكل ما عشته منذ العام 1975 وحتى العام 1992، من الشمال إلى الجنوب مروراً بالجبل وبيروت... وما أنا في كل ذلك سوى فرد من بين ألاف، منهم من استشهد ومنهم من حمل جراحه وعمل بصمت.
وإني إذا اكتب فيما أكتب تفاصيل أحداث سياسية وعسكرية بقيت سرية حتى اليوم، فليس من أجل التجريح، والحرب في لبنان ظلمت كل أبنائه، بل من أجل إبراز لحظات الحقيقة التي صفعتنا جميعاً.
دافعي الوحيد: معاناتي، وقلقي الكبير من فقدان الحرية والسيادة أو تكرار الحرب، وسقوط البيت مرة أخرى على رؤوسنا جميعاً.
