أسهم التقدم العلمي قديماً خصوصاً بعد إكتشاف المجهر في التعرف على عالم جديد من الأحياء الدقيقة حيث كان يصعب رؤيتها من قبل، وتتواجد هذه الأحياء الدقيقة حولنا في كل مكان، في الماء، الهواء والتربة، وقد حدث أيضاً تقدماً واضحاً في السنوات الأخيرة، أدى هذا التقدم إلى إظهار دور هذه الأحياء الدقيقة في حياتنا اليومية.
وقد اكتشف الإنسان فيما بعد أن لهذه الأحياء الدقيقة دوراً هاماً في التوازن البيئي وأنها ذات قدرة فائقة، ومنها ما هو نافع وما هو ضار؛ وقد لوحظ أن هناك العديد من العلاقات المتبادلة بين الأحياء الدقيقة وبعضها البعض، وبينها وبين الوسط البيئي الذي تعيش فيه، سواء كان هذا الوسط النبات أو التربة فهي تتأثر به وتؤثر فيه، كما لوحظ أيضاً ان هناك إهتمام واضح بهذه العلاقات وآثارها على أمراض النبات.
يتناول هذا الكتاب: أولاً: "شرح مبسط لتعريف علم بيئة الأحياء الدقيقة"، ثانياً: "دراسة الأحياء الدقيقة في بيئاتها المختلفة"، ثالثاً: "دراسة المجموعات الميكروبية الرئيسية من ناحية وصفها وتقسيمها وإنتشارها وأهميتها"، رابعاً: "العلاقات المتبادلة بين الأحياء الدقيقة وبعضها البعض؛ بينها وبين حيوانات التربة، بينها وبين كل من التربة والنبات، تأثيرها في أي وسط تعيش فيه وتأثرها به.
أما خامساً: دراسة التحولات التي تقوم بها المجموعات الميكروبية المختلفة مع شرح لأهميتها في الطبيعة والخطوات الكيميائية الحيوية التي تتم بها وكذلك تأثير العوامل البيئية المختلفة عليها، مثل تحولات عناصر الكربون، النيتروجين، الفسفور، الكبريت والحديد.
