لقد ظهر علم اجتماع العائلة بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية إذ استقل عن علم الاجتماع وأصبح موضوعاً قائماً بحد ذاته بعد ازدياد أهمية العائلة ومضاعفة أدوارها في الكل الاجتماعي وبعد تأثيرها بعدد كبير من العوامل والقوى الاجتماعية وبعد تداخل وتفاعل كل من العوامل العائلية والعوامل الاجتماعية بطريقة لا يمكن فصل بعضها عن بعض ، لهذا ظهر علم احتماع العائلة ليدرس الظواهر العائلية القابعة في المجتمع. يحتوي الكتاب على أحد عشر فصلاً متكاملاً وهي الفصل الأول الموسوم على اجتماع العائلة مفهومه، طبيعته وأهدافه، أما الفصل الثاني فتناول أساسيات في علم اجتماع العائلة، الفصل الثالث بحث ماهية وطبيعة العائلة البشرية وماهية تطور الزواج، ويدرس الفصل الرابع موضوع الصفات التقليدية لنظم العائلة والقرابة، والفصل الخامس تناول بالدراسة والتحليل آثار التصنيع في نظم العائلة والقرابة والزواج، أما الفصل السادس فيدرس موضوع البناء الاجتماعي وتغيير العائلة، وتناول الفصل السابع دور الجماعات المؤسسية في التنشئة الاجتماعية في مجتمع متغير، أما الفصل الثامن فاهتم بدراسة المشكلات التنشيئية التي ترافق الجماعات المؤسسية وكيفية مواجهتها في مجتمع متغير، الفصل التاسع تناول دور التنشئة الأسرية في تكوين السمات النموذجية للشخصية، والعاشر تناول موضوع الأسرة العربية في مجتمع متغير، وأخيراً تناول الفصل الحادي عشر دور العائلة في تنشئة الأبناء وتحصيلهم العلمي.
