يضم هذا الكتاب رسالتين من التراث النقدي نجمتا في إطار جدل ديني وفني واجتماعي حول قضـيتين أدبيتين هما: الموقف الديني من الشعر، والمفاضلة بين الكاتب والشاعر وبين الكتابة والشعر. ولكل منهما تاريخ في الإطار الثقافي العربي. فقد بدأ الجدل حول مدى قبول الشعر والشعراء دينياً منذ نزلت الآيات القرآنية الكريمة التي تنفي كون القرآن الكريم شعراً، وكون النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، شاعراً، وكذلك الآيات الكريمة في سورة الشعراء التي تصفهم بالغواية، وتستثني من الحكم الشعراء المؤمنين، ويضاف إلى هذه النصوص القرآنية أحاديث نبوية شـريفة تقع في الإطار نفسه. وقد أدى هذا إلى أن تصبح قضـية الموقف الديني من الشعر والشعراء واحدة من القضايا التي شغلت الأوساط الدينية والأدبية والاجتماعية بعامة. وهو ما نجد تجلياته في كثير من الكتب الدينية والأدبية والنقدية العربية منذ مرحلة مبكرة من تاريخ الكتابة العربية وحتى الوقت الراهن، كما يتضح في الرسالة التي تقع في صدر هذا الكتاب.
