يأتي هذا الكتاب من (سلسلة الخالدين الشباب) وهو الكتاب السابع وعنوانه (الإمام: إبن جرير الطبري) للمؤلف علي يوسف علي. يتوجه الكتاب إلى الشباب المسلم ويقدم لهم سيرة حياة الطبري، صاحب التعانيق المشهورة وهو من أهل آمل طبرستان ولد بها سنة 224ه، ورحل من بلده في طلب العلم وهو إبن اثنتي عشرة سنة، "سنة ست وثلاثون ومائتان"، وطوف في الأقاليم، فسُمع في مصر، والشام، والعراق، ثم استقر ببغداد وبقي بها إلى أن مات سنة عشر وثلاثمائة للهجرة.
وإبن جرير الطبري كما جاء عند علماء الأمة: جمع من العلوم ما لم يشاركه فيه أحد من أهل عصره، فكان حافظاً لكتاب الله، بصيراً بالقرآن، عارفاً بالمعاني، فقيهاً في أحكام القراءات، عالماً بالسنن وطرقها وصحيحها وسقيمها، وناسخها ومنسوخها، عارفاً بأقوال الصحابة والتابعين، ومن بعدهم من المخالفين في الأحكام ومسائل الحلال والحرام ...
وفي الكتاب يقدم المؤلف إبن جريراً كمثال يُحتذى على العالم الذي يلقن تلاميذه القيم النبيلة والأخلاق الحميدة فيقول: لقد ظل إبن جرير يلقن تلاميذه في ثقة المؤمن المدرك لالتزامات إيمانه وإذا بالتلاميذ ينهلون من هذا البحر الزاخر ويعبّون من هذا المحيط الوافر مقتدين به في شخصيته الأدبية الفذة المتعالية عن سفاسف الأمور ودنايا الأخلاق ..." إلى ذلك يذكر المؤلف "منزلة تفسيره" وخاصة في تفسير (جامع البيان) كأول كتاب في التفسير وصل إلينا، و"شهادة العلماء" فيه، وما قيل في تفسيره ... كما يذكر تصانيفه "تاريخ الأمم والملوك" وكتاب "القراءات" ... ومن أحسن مصنفاته "تهذيب الآثار" الذي قال عنه "إبن كثير في بدايته: ومن أحسن مصنفاته تهذيب الآثار ولو كمل لما احتيج معه إلى شيء، ولكان فيه الكتابة لكن لم يتمه" ، ويختتم الكتاب بـ "وفاة إبن جرير الطبري" ودفنه بداره في بغداد.
