أزمة السنة 1882، أو "مسألة لويس" كما يدعوها بعضهم، بالكلية السورية الإنجيلية، محطة بارزة في تاريخ الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، أحد أقدم معاهد التعليم العالي وأكبرها في لبنان، وأكثرها تأثيراً في التقدم الحضاري بعدد من بلدان الشرق الأدنى، وأوسعها شهرة في العالم.
بقيت تفاصيل هذه الأزمة، على مدى ثمانين سنة تقريباً، مهملة دون دراسة تاريخية جادة. وكانت معرفتنا بوقائعها، خلال تلك الفترة الطويلة من الزمن، مستمدة مما دونه أفراد قلائل عن بعض جوانبها من تعليقات وتذكارات، وكذلك، من القصص والأخبار التي كانت تتردد عنها في أوساط الجامعة، فينقلها الخلف عن السلف استناداً إلى روايات غير ثابتة دائماً. وكانت المعلومات المستخلصة من كل ما كتب وروي عن الأزمة تبدو، في كثير من المواضع، ناقصة، وغامضة، بل ومتناقضة أحياناً.
وبمناسبة احتفال الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت بعيدها المئوي الأول، سنة 1966، أصدرت "لجنة المنشورات" كتاب العيد بمجلديه العربي والإنكليزي، وف يكل منهما دراسة تاريخية عن الأزمة. كانت الدراستان موجزتين، ولكنهما استندتا إلى مصادر أولية مهمة، وألقتا ضوءاً جديداً على الأزمة.
ما إن صدر كتاب العيد، قبل خمس وعشرين سنة، حتى ظهر اهتمام واسع بالأزمة، وإقبال متزايد على دراستها حسب الأصول العلمية، ليس في الجامعة الأميركية فحسب، بل، أيضاً، في بضعة أوساط علمية في الشرق وفي الغرب. وكان من ثمار هذا الاهتمام الوقوع على مصادر أولية جديدة، ونشر عدد من الدراسات في مجلات علمية متخصصة. ولكن هذه الدراسات القيمة لم تف الأزمة كل حقها من البحث، لأنها جاءت مجتزأة وغير متوازنة، بمعنى أنها اقتصرت على عرض جانب أو أكثر من جوانب الأزمة واهملت الجوانب الأخرى.
وهذا الكتاب هو أول كتاب ينشر عن الأزمة، ويخصص بكامله لدراستها. ويتألف من مقدمة، واثني عشر فصلاً، وخاتمة، وتسعة ملاحق، وجدول المصادر، والفهرس، موزعة على أربعة أبواب هي: الباب الأول، المدخل، وفيه ثلاثة فصول. والباب الثاني، الأزمة، وفيه ثلاثة فصول. والباب الثالث، الذيول والنتائج، وفيه ستة فصول والخاتمة، والباب الرابع، وفيه الملاحق والمصادر والفهرس.
