"تسمرت أنظاري على القارب وهو ينساب ببطء في البداية، ثم بسرعة بعد ذلك في اتجاه المدينة النائمة في مكان ما في الظلام. ثم اختفى حمد عن نظري في ظلمة الليل. أخذ بصيصٌ من ضوء الفجر بالانتشار. حاولت أرى المدينة، لكن دون جدوى: وداعاً يا مدينتي! لكم أحببتك رغم كل شيء. يا كثبان الرمل التي رافقتني سنوات في أمسياتي، يا أيها النخيل الحزين الذي تتناقض أعداده تحت تعبيد الطرقات ومسح الأراضي للمباني الحديثة! وداعاً يا جنادب الليل تؤنس وحشتي بالصرصرة في أذني! وداعا أيتها النجوم التي أضاءت ظلمتي!.. وداعاً يا مدينتي! لا أعرف شكل المدن الآتية، ولا روائحها، أ وقع ضجيجها.. لكنها لن تشبهك، فقد استودعتك تراب أمي وأبي، وطفولة ولّت ولن يمكن أحياؤها في مدينة أخرى.. لهذا فمع أن جسدي راحل عنك إلا أنني سأحمل في قلبي أشياء كثيرة غالية منك.. فأنا راحل أبحث عن مدينة أخرى تأويني، ولست أضع شروطاً، بل أنا أقبل بمن يقبل بي: أية مدينة تأويني وتجعلني أنام ليلي نوماً عميقاً، لا أمضيه في التجوال مشرداً في ضواحيها. مدينة تسامحني على ما كنت وتفتح لي صفحة جديدة لكي أولد من جديد ولادة طفل لا يتذكر شيئاً، واحد من آلاف الأطفال، وأن يشب كصبي من آلاف الصبية، وأن يحيا كرجل مثل كل الرجال، دون حسرة ودون ذاكرة، ودون وهم. رجل قادر أن يحب امرأة وأن يستقبل حبها له، وألا يضطر في سبيل ذلك لأن يصنع المستحيل".
