يسعى هذا الكتاب لتبيان الأهداف الأساسية للتربية بعد استعراض المراحل التاريخية التي مرت بها من تطوير في مسيرتها نحو نوعية أفضل وأداء أوضح وأحدث، وفي إطار تحقيق الأهداف التي سعى الكتاب للكشف عنها فقد اهتم أولاً بإلقاء الضوء على البعد التاريخي للتربية والحياة المدرسية بأسلوب مكثف ودال وتوثيقي بدءاً من العصر الوسيط وما تخلله من مفاهيم تربوية تعكس النمط الاجتماعي والحضاري آنذاك، وتطرق إلى الواقع التربوي في العصر العربي الإسلامي مع التدليل على أهم شخصياته التربوية وقد اقتطف منها شخصية الغزالي وابن خلدون وابن الأزرق مع شرح لفلسفتهم التربوية والخلقية، ثم انتقل بعدها لإلقاء الضوء على قيامة التربية وظروفها والأهداف الأساسية لها في زمن النهضة وعرض وتحليل للرابطة بين التربية كواقع وكمفهوم وبين الإصلاح الديني آنذاك. وكان لا بد من توضيح لنماذج التربية ومفاهيمها الواقعية والحسية والطبيعية وحيثياتها في القرن السابع عشر ومن ثم تحليل للتوجه النفسي في التربية كمنحى متطور ومتقدم لتطور العملية التربوية، وصولاً إلى عرض وتحليل مسهب للتربية المعاصرة بكل ما تحمل من مضمون وأساليب وتقنيات ومفاهيم متجددة تدعو إلى نفض الغبار والتحرر من الأسلوب القديم ومعطياته ليتواكب مفهوم التربية مع التطور الحضاري والثقافي والسياسي في مجتمعنا الحديث.
