يرى الباحث أن الأمة الإسلامية تعيش في هذه الحقبة من الزمن، أزمة ذات بعدين: أولهما: هوية الذات وتحققها على مستوى الفعالية التاريخية، وثانيهما: وعي الدين الإسلامي وعياً يتيح هذا التحقق، ما يثير إشكالية مركزية محورها إمكانية تطبيق الشريعة الإسلامية في هذا الزمان. ويرى أن الخلافات المزمنة، بين أهل السنة والشيعة، دليل على وجود تلك الأزمة، وبخاصة أنها تتمثل في كثير من الأحيان في اتهامات قائمة على عدم معرفة حقائق الأمور، ما يقتضي بيان هذه الحقائق، بغية تجاوز هذه الأزمة والوصول ‘لى مدار يفضي غلى الوعي والنهوض. تعود هذه الخلافات، في أساسها، إلى القضية المركزية، وهي "الإمامة"، وقديماً قال "محمد بن عبد الكريم الشهرستاني: "وأعظم خلاف بين الأمة خلاف الإمامة، إذ ما سلَّ سيف في الإسلام، على قاعدة دينية، مثل ما سل على الإمامة في كل زمان".
يخاطب الباحث في هذا لكتاب، كل من يتطلع بشوق إلى تجاوز الأزمة، وإقامة خلافة راشدة وظهور إمامة حق في هذا الزمان، فيبحث "أزمة الخلافة والإمامة وآثارها المعاصرة"ـ فيعود إلى جذور الخلاف، منذ ظهوره، بعد وفاة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم مباشرة، ويتتبع مساره التاريخى، وما يتيح تبين آثاره المعاصرة وسبل تجاوزه. ويتتبع الباحث في عرضه وتحليله الهادفين إلى معرفة حقائق الأزمة وأدلتها المقنعة، منهجاً تاريخياً نقدياً، موضوعياً، يستند غلى المصادر الأصلية في تقديم الأدلة والبراهين، ويعتمد خطة بحث واضحة متماسكة ولغة سلسلة توصل المعاني إلى القارىء بيسر لا يخلو من إمتاع يؤتيه عمق الخطاب ودقته وسهولته.
