الصوت ظاهرة طبيعية تستعملها الكائنات الحيّة على اختلافها، فتدرك أثرها وتتعامل معها دون أن تعي كنهها. والواقع أن الكائن البشري وعى منذ القدم أهمية الصوت في الحياة اليومية وفي العلاقات بين الأفراد والشعوب. وليس اكتشاف الحرف والكتابة سوى نوع من الإدراك الواعي لعمل الصوت اللغوي ودوره في التواصل البشري.
وعلم الأصوات العام أو "الفونتيك" يهتم بالوجه المادي لأصوات اللغة البشرية أي بدراسة العناصر الصوتية للسلسلة الكلامية المعتبرة في تحقيقها الملموس وبمعزل عن وظيفتها اللغوية، أي عن استخدامها في التواصل. وهذا يعني أنه يعمل على تحليل العناصر الصوتية من حيث كونها أحداثاً منظومة تتمتع بتأثير سمعي معين دون النظر في وظائفها، أو قيم استعمالاتها.
وهذا الكتاب يتضمن دراسة الصوت اللغوي العربي وقد جاء تسلسل أبوابه وفقاً للتوزيع التالي: اللغة في الدراسات اللسانية، علم الأصوات العام، أصوات اللغة العربية، ومن الصوت اللغوي إلى الرمز المكتوب... ولما كان السند الرئيسي لمثل هذه الدراسة علم اللسانية الحديث، الذي رأى النور وتطور في الدول الغربية، يكون من الطبيعي أن نرجع إلى ما جاء به هذا العلم في ميدان دراسة الأصوات وبالتالي يكون المرجع الرئيسي لهذه الدراسة أمهات الكتب باللغة الفرنسية.
وقد أضاف المؤلف في نهاية الكتاب معجماً ألفبائياً ثلاثي اللغات يتضمن تحديد المفاهيم الأساسية في علم الأصوات تحديداً مقتضباً والهدف الذي ابتغاه المؤلف في كتابه هذا هو أن يقدم للمتكلمين بلغة الضاد وسيلة علمية تساعدهم في وعي لغتهم وفهم مكوناتها.
