هذا الكتاب ليس عن حياة ابن خلدون وأعماله بصورة شاملة، وإنما يقتصر على الجوانب الاجتماعية من النظرية الخلدونية التي إما لم تذكر من قبل أو ذكرت باختصار جداً، والتي إما لم تقارن مع غيرها من الآراء الاجتماعية أو لم يتم مقارنتها بوضوح أو إسهاب. وقد اعتمدنا على المقدمة لابن خلدون للحصول على أفكاره المهمة. والحق يقال، إن هناك أجزاء كثيرة من المقدمة ليس لها صلة بالمفاهيم والآراء الاجتماعية. وهذا ليس غريباً إذا تمت مقارنة هذا الكتاب بكتاب أوغست كونت الفلسفة الوضعية Positive philosophy حيث أن القسم الكبير من هذا الكتاب الخير لا علاقة له بعلم الاجتماع أو العلوم الاجتماعية.
