قد لا يتعدى هذا الكتاب كونه مجموعة إنفعالات في عالم متغير، تلتقي فيه أسئلةٌ مستجدّة مع أسئلة موروثة، وتواجه فيه إنطباعات جديدة محتارة، ذاكرةٌ تدافع عن مكتسباتها، لقد كنت دائماً شفوفاً بالفكر الذي يعيش في الحياة اليومية، وأشد ما يجذبني لحظة تماس عقل حاضر بظاهرة تبدو عابرة، ولا تكتمل في نظري شاعرية شعر، ولا بلاغة فكر، ولا فنية رسم، إلا في هذه الصلة بمجريات الحياة ومتغيراتها، وأملي أن أكون قد لمست في هذه المقالات بعضاً مما يجول في خاطر الناس، وحياتهم اليوم.
وتدين مقالات هذا الكتاب بوجودها لمجلة القافلة، والتي احتوت في إصدارها الجديد باباً عنوانه "حياتنا اليوم" من صفحة واحدة، وحين كنا نجمع مواد العدد الأول عام 2002، ورغم أن مهمتي الأساسية كانت إخراج المجلة الفني، وجدت نفسي أتطوع لكتابة هذه الزاوية، واستمررت في كتابتها لباقي السنوات، وذلك لأغلب الأعداد، أما المرات القليلة التي لم أكتبها فيها، فقد كان ذلك لأن لي في نفس العدد مقالاً أطول في صفحات أخرى، والمقالات القليلة الطويلة تم جمعها في منتصف الكتاب، ومطبوعة على ورق مختلف.
وإني إذ أجمعها هنا، فلربما يشكّل تجاورها شيئاً جديداً يختلف عما شكله كل مقالٍ منها حينما نُشرت متفرقة، وأضفت إليها بعض الرسوم، فإذا قصّرت في القول جاء الرسم معوضاً، وإذا قصرت بالرسم أتى الكلام مسدداً، كمضيف... حوائج البيت لديه قليلة.
