ليس للمرء أن يحدّد بدقة مقدار الإحساس الفنّيّ في تصميم "كلمة"، كان الخطّاط العربي في الماضي، بالرغم من إتّباعه قواعد صارمة لفنّه، يبثّ في ما يخطّه أحاسيسه، غير أنّ ما نقدّمه هنا هو فنّ من نوع آخر، يقوم على تصميم الكلمات، ويُسمى، اليوم، "فن الكلمة"؛ وهذا القسم، رغم رواجه المتزايد، لا يزال بحاجةٍ إلى فهم أفضل.
إن التصاميم التي تظهر في هذا الكتاب تكاد تُصنّف إلى مجموعتين، دون ان تنتمي أيّ منهما إلى فنّ الخط العربي الكلسيكي.
المجموعة الاولى هي الأعمال التلقائية، المخطوطة بضربات ريشة حرّة، أما الثانية فالكلمات المصممة والمرسومة رسماً دقيقاً، لتشبه شيئاً أو تعكس معنى.
وكان الخطّاطون العرب يذهبون بفنّهم إلى إتّجاه مشابه لهذا في الماضي، فيجد المرء تشكيلات كلاسيكية لكلماتٍ خُطّت على شكل أسدٍ أو سفينة أو غيرهما، وبعض الأعمال في هذا الكتاب قريبة من هذا المنحى، إلا أنها أتت بأشكال حديثة وأسلوب معاصر.
فالأشكال الهندسية البسيطة التي تصل إلى حدّ التجريد، كما ضربات اليد الحرّة التي تقصي التفاصيل غير الضرورية، لتعزّز قوة التعبير، سمتان من أهمّ سمات الفن الحديث، االأمر الذي يضع هذه الأعمال في إطار عصرها وبيئتها الحضاريّة في وقت واحد.
