هذا الكتاب يسلط الضوء على المؤسسات الدولية التي تحكم العولمة، وهي: صندوق النقد الدولي، والبنك الدولي، ومنظمة التجارة العالمية.
سنرى كيف تتخذ القرارات الكبرى، وكيف أن التأثير الإيديولوجي والسياسي، هو الذي يتحكم بتلك القرارات، فالتناقض برز واضحاً بين المبادئ التي أعلنت، من منافسة وحرية تجارة وديموقراطية، وبين السياسات في مجال التطبيق. فقد دعوا إلى حرية التجارة، بينما هم أغلقوا أسواقهم أمام بضائع الدول الفقير’، ودعوا إلى المنافسة، بينما شجعوا على إقامة الاحتكارات، وطالبوا الدول النامية برفع الدعم عن المزارعين، في الوقت الذي دفعوا فيه ملايين الدولارات لدعم المزارعين الأوروبيين والأمريكيين.
يعتمد هذا الكتاب على التجربة الشخصية لأحد كبار الاقتصاديين في البنك الدولي خلال التسعينيات، وهو جوزيف ستجلتز الحائز على جائزة نوبل في الاقتصاد، والذي أنهي عقده بسبب معارضته لتلك السياسات.
