يعد كتاب نهج البلاغة بإجماع العلماء كتاب سياسة وفن اجتماع وآداب وعلوم فلكية وما شابه من العلوم القريبة والبعيدة، الظاهرية والباطنية. صدر عن أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام في مناسبات مختلفة وأمكنة متعددو، وجمعه الشريف الرضي من مختلف المصادر الإسلامية ورتبه على شكل كتاب كامل يحوي الخطب والكلام والحكم والرسائل: وهذا الشرح هو ترجمة: عز الدين أبو حامد بن هبة الله بن محمد بن محمد بن الحسين بن أبي الحديد المدائني؛ احد جهابذة العلماء، والمؤرخين، ممن سطع نجمه في العصر العباسي الثاني أزهى العصور الإسلامية إنتاجاً وتأليفاً. يقول ابن ابي الحديد: "ويكفي هذا الكتاب الذي نحن شارحوه دلالة على أنه لا يجاري في الفصاحة، ولا يباري في البلاغة، وحسبك أنه لم يدوَن لأحد من فصحاء الصحابة العشر، ولا نصف العشر مما دوَن له، وكفاك في هذا الباب ما يقوله أبو عثمان الجاحظ في مدحه في كتاب البيان والتبيين وفي غيره من كتبه".
هذا الكتاب يشرح فيه ابن الحديد ما دار بين الصحابة؛ فجاء فريداً في فنه، وفوائده، ومقاصده الشريفة يقول ابن أبي الحديد: وأنا قبل أن أشرع في الشرح أذكر أقوال أصحابنا في الإمامة والتفضيل والبغاة والخوارج، ومتبعَ ذلك بذكر نسب أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام، ولمع يسيرة من فضائله، ثم أثلث بذكر نسب الرضي أبي الحسن محمد بن الحسين الموسوي، وبعض خصائصه ومناقبه. ثم أشرع في شرح خطبة نهج البلاغة لأبي الحسن فإذا انتهيت من ذلك كله ابتدأت بعون الله وتوفيقه في شرح كلام أمير المؤمنين شيئاً فشيئاً".
تأتي أهمية شرح ابن أبي الحديد عن غيره من شراح نهج البلاغة من كونه يكشف عن كثير من التحريف الذي طال نهج البلاغة، ونسبة كلام إلى أمير المؤمنين باطل، لهذا جاء هذا الكتاب الموسوعة مبيناً الأسانيد الصحيحة من المنقولات وبيان صدقها وكذبها.
