النحاس من العلماء الذين أسهموا في بناء صرح هذه اللُّغة العظيمة، وطوَّفَ في بلاد واسعة طلباً للعلم، ثم عاد إلى مصر واستقرّ فيها يؤلّف ويدرس، فنفع بعلمه الكثيرين.
فكان واسع المعرفة، كثير التأليف، اهتمَّ بالعربية إهتماماً كبيراً، فكتب في كلّ فنّ من فنونها، وتناول كثيراً من خصائصها، بذوق سليم وفكر ثاقب وإطلاع واسع، وكتب في مختلف علوم القرآن والحديث، مخلِّفاً في ذلك عدداً كبيراً من الكتب، تدلّ على عِظَم إطّلاعه وحُسنِ إختياره آراءَ غيره، وإستشهاده بها في كتبه؛ إلاّ أنه لم ينل العناية التي يستحقها على الرغم من أنه يمثل فترة مهمّة من تاريخنا العلمي.
لهذا اختار المؤلف كتابه "شرح القصائد التسع المشهورات" لأنه ضمنه الكثير من آرائه النحوية، وآراء غيره من علماء المذهبين وخلافاتهم، مطبقة على نصوص من الشعر الجاهلي؛ ويقوم بحثه على قسمين: الأول: دراسة عامّة سبقت تحقيق الكتاب، بناه المؤلف على خمسة فصول، تناول في الفصل الأول حياة النحاس، ثم ذكر نسبه ورحلاته وأساتذته، وتلاميذه وآثاره، واستعرض في الفصل الثاني موقفه من علماء المذاهب النحوية، والقرّاء، وتناول في الفصل الثالث المعلقات، واستعرض أسماءها وسبب تسميتها، والآراء التي قيلت في عددها، ثم ذكر شرّاح المعلّقات الذين سبقوا النحّاس، والذين جاؤوا من بعده، ثم قارن بينه وبين الذين تأثّر بهم كابن كيسان وابن الأنباري، ومن أثَّر فيهم كالتبريزي، وكان الفصل الرابع في أهمية شرح النحّاس أظهر فيه قيمته، ثم استعرض العلوم التي تناول فيه دراسات قرآنية بين سبيله في معالجتها، ودراسات لغوية أوضح طريقه في بحث مسائل اللغة والمصطلحات التي استعملها كالأضداد والتغليب والقلب والقياس، ودراسات صرفية تناول فيها الإبدال والإدغام وصحّة حروف اللِّين وأوزان الجموع والتصغير والنسب.
واستعرض في الفصل الخامس نسخ الكتاب، وسبب تفضيل الأصل الذي اعتمده وذكر النسخ التي أهملها، والثاني تحقيق نصّ الكتاب، ويشمل أبيات القصائد، وتحقيق شرح النحّاس لها، أما أبيات القصائد فمن أجل أن يقدمها صحيحة رجع بها أوَّل ما رجع بعد النسخ المعتمدة إلى نسخة مختصرة قديمة - نسخة أحمد الثالث، أما شرح النحّاس للقصائد فقد ضبطه بمعارضة نسخة الأصل بالنسخ الأخرى.
