سيبويه لقب اشتهر به "عمرو بن عثمان بن قنبر" وهو من "موالي بني الحارث بن كعب" قدم البصرة وهو غلام ناشئ استطاع أن يبلغ بذكائه ودأبه وجهوده هذه المنزلة العلمية الباقية وهو رأس مدرسة البصرة في النحو. ترك سيبويه كتاباً هاماً حمل اسم "كتاب سيبويه" وهو في النحو، لقي هذا الكتاب اهتماماً كبيراً من العلماء، شرحوه وعلقوا عليه ومن أهم هذه الشروح شرح أبي جعفر أحمد بن النحاس وهو جاء تحت عنوان كتاب "شرح أبيات سيبويه". استهل أبو جعفر النحاس كتابه هذا بمقدمة بيّن فيها منهجه الذي سيتبعه وهو الإيجاز في شرح معاني الأبيات وحل مشكلاتها وعدم الإخلال بالمهم من إعرابها وتقسيمها إلى أبواب.
وكان عدد أبواب الكتاب أربعة وتسعين باباً. ظهرت في تبويب النحاس هذا ميزتان هما: أولاً: أنه قد يستشهد في الباب الواحد بأبيات متفرقة في كتاب سيبويه على أكثر من باب فالنحاس كان يحاول أن يضم الأبيات التي هي لموضوع واحد في باب وإن كانت متفرقة في كتاب سيبويه. ثانياً: أنه لم يلتزم بتسمية الأبواب بما وضعه سيبويه من أسماء لأبواب كتابه وإنما كان يوجز أحياناً ويبسط أحياناً أخرى في العنوان ولما كان لهذا الكتاب فائدته وقيمته العلمية عني الدكتور "زهير زاهد" بتذيله بتحقيق لطيف تجلى بـ: أولاً: نسب الشواهد إلى أصحابها، ثانياً: خرج الآيات القرآنية المستشهد بها وكذا الأمثال الواردة، ثالثاً: دوّن الفهارس الضرورية في نهاية الكتاب لتكون دليلاً للقارئ في هذا الكتاب.
