في دراسته هذه يبحث أ.د. محمد بن مريسي الحارثي في أصول الحداثة العربية المؤسسة على معطيات الذكر المحدث في فعله التغييري وفي مسيرة الحداثة العربية في الثقافة الإبداعية النظرية. ويقف طويلاً عند صورة الحداثة العربية المعاصرة التي نُظرتْ في انبثاقاتها إلى المعطي الغربي، مما اثرت على وظيفة الحداثة العربية المعاصرة في نظر غير باحث لم يلتفتوا إلى اصول الحداثة العربية الحقيقية، والذين يرى الكاتب أنهم سحبوا مفاهيم غير عربية إلى الحداثة، متخذين الأزمة الحضارية المعاصرة مستنداً ومبرراً قوياً في النظر إلى أن الحداثة ثورة تغييرية وليست تجديداً ومسايرة للقيم الفكرية التراثية إلا عند القلة من الدارسين.
لذلك كله، نرى الكاتب يبدأ بالبحث في أصول الحداثة العربية، باحثاً عن حداثة عربية تراثية أصلية ومستجدة، أثارتها مستجدات العصر أكثر من مثيرات التراث العربي لها. فالكاتب يرى "أن لنا حداثتنا المعبرة عن هويتها وروحها العربية الإسلامية. ولكل حضارة حداثتها. وأن حداثة الغرب في التغيير والتجديد الذي تقوم عليهما والهدم طريق البناء. هي فلسفة الحداثة العربية التي سبقت التنظير الحداثي الحديث في الزمان، ولم تكن مشاكلة لحداثة الغرب في مادتها، ومنهجها. فالحداثة العربية أصولها إلهية – يقول الكاتب – غيرت الديانات الوثنية التي كانت سائدة قبل إنزالها على قلب محمد بن عبد الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. وهدمت الشرك وأقامت التوحيد. واستقر التغيير وتناسب وكمل، وثبت وسيظل ثابتاً إلى قيام الساعة".
