لقد أعد المؤلف صفحات هذا الكتاب من خلال قراءته لآلاف الصفحات من كتب تراثنا العربي الغني، ومن أمهات الكتب القديمة في السيرة والتفسير والفقه والأدب والشعر والتاريخ وغيرها، وقام باقتباس ما تيسر له منها، ومن ثم هذبها ورتبها لتكون متعة شخصية للقارئ في مقامه وسفره. وقد قام من خلال بترتيب اقتباساته حسب موضوعها في تسعة عشر فصلا، فتحدث في الفصل الأول عن القيم والخلائق الانسانية، وتناول الفصل الثاني الأقوال المشتركة في المواعظ والنصائح والوصايا والحكم والعبر، وفي الفصل الثالث أقوال في بعض الصفات والقيم البشرية والسؤدد والتيه والفخر والحسب، وفي الفصل الرابع تناول موضوع الذات البشرية والتقوى والورع والنسك والزهد والقناعة، وفي الفصل الخامس تحدث عن الدنيا وما قيل فيها ذما ومدحا وتحذيرا، اما الفصل السادس فتحدث عن نوابغ القول في العلاقات الاجتماعية والتعاملاتت الانسانية والقيم البشرية، أما الفصل السابع فتناول الحب والعشق والوجد والشكوى والعفة والغربة ونأي الأحبة، وفي الفصل الثامن تحدث عن النساء وطرائفهن، وعرض في الفصل التاسع نماذج من الفصاحة والنباهة والبيان وقوة الحجة، وفي الفص العاشر عرض موضوع الطرائف والنوادر والملح، وفي الفصل الحادي عشر تناول طرائف المستطرف، أما الفصل الثاني عشر فتناول أخلاط من مفاكهات ومداعبات وفطن، وفي الفصل الثالث عشر تحدث عن الشعر، وتناول الفصل الرابع عشر مقتطفات من بديع الكلام، وفي الفصل الخامس عشر الأمثال، وفي الفصل السادس عشر طرائف وبذاءات أهل الفسق والفجور والمجون والذندقة و اللهو والعبث وطرائف بعض الشعراء والمغنين، وفي الفصل السابع عشر تحدث عن أخلاط من أقوال النوابغ والطرف اللوامع، وفي الفصل الثامن عشر تناول لطائف وفوائد لا يربط بينها رابط، أما الفصل التاسع عشر والأخير فتحدث عن بنو هاشم وأنصارهم مروءات ومواقف.
