يشتمل هذا الكتاب على عدد من الدراسات المختلف التي تتناول عدداً كبيراً من المؤلفين العرب في العصور الوسطى: الجاحظ والخطيب البغدادي، وبديع الزمان الهمذاني، والصفدي، وابن العماد الحنبلي، وآخرين. ومع ذلك فإن هذه الدراسات تروى الحكاية نفسها، بطرق تختلف من الناحية الشكلية. هذه الحكاية تأتي من منطلق رد الفعل والبحث. رد الفعل هو رد على مذاهب المستشرقين الذين زعموا أن أعمال هؤلاء المؤلفين لا تخضه لنظام محدد، أو حافلة بالتكرار، أو تفتقر إلى الفنية بشكل عام. أما البحث فكان بحثاً لمبادئ النظام، والقوانين، والأساليب الفنية التي استخدمها هؤلاء المؤلفون في خلق أعمالهم.
والهدف من هذه الدراسات هو إبراز أعمال أولئك المؤلفين الذين لم ينالوا ما هم جديرون به من اهتمام، ولم يقدروا حق قدرهم، نظراً لما كانوا يتميزون به منزلة أدبية رفيعة أو مرتبة حضارية متميزة في إطار الحضارة العربية الكلاسيكية، والبحث قد جرى على خطين متوازيين يعالجان نوعين مختلفين من النصوص نستطيع أن نسمي النوع أول: "أدب المسامرات" ففي العصر الكلاسيكي كان أحد معاني كلمة "أدب" يعبر عن سلسلة نصوص مكتوبة معظمها يغلب عليه النثر، ويأتي الشعر في شكل مقطوعات قصيرة لأداء متكاملة في ذاتها وأنها إلى جانب ما كانت تعكسه من قيم حضارية وفنية عامة، وتؤدي وظيفتين هامتين في التعليم والتسلية. النوع الثاني من النصوص قد يبدوان لأول وهلة مختلفين، إلا أنهما بالفعل يتشابهان في عدة أمور كان ينبغي التركيز عليها، فكلاهما ينقل معلومات هامة وقيماً حضارية. وكلاهما يعتمد ف أحوال كثيرة على وحدات متكاملة كما يشتمل كلاهما على النثر غالباً وعلى الشعر أحياناً، كما أنها لم تنل ما هي جديرة به من اهتمام نقاد الأدب، بل لعلها لم تفهم الفهم الصحيح، الذي يتناسب مع أهميتها، ومكانة أصحابها.
