هل حقاً أن العقل العربي أو العقل الشرقي هو عقل متفلسف وأن الفلسفة هي من خصائص وصفات العقل الغربي فقط. هذا ما يناقشه مؤلف هذا الكتاب من خلال تركيزه على إشكالية التوفيق بين العقل والنقل التي يرى أغلب الباحثين في الفكر العربي الإسلامي والفلسفة العربية الإسلامية أنها كانت من الإشكاليات الأكثر حضوراً في هذا الفكر، حتى وصفها البعض أنها فلسفة توفيقية أو تلفيقية.
وبالعودة للنصوص التي تناولت هذه الإشكالية يرى المؤلف أن هذه النصوص تتمحور حول قضية واحدة يمكن صياغتها بالسؤال الآتي: هل العقل يوافق النقل وإذا كان ثمة خلاف بين العقل والنقل فأي منهما يعتمد أصلاً ومرجعاً العقل أم النقل؟ ولمعرفة الجواب لا بد من قراءة الخطاب الفلسفي داخل إطاره الفكري والاجتماعي العام.
يقدم المؤلف في هذا الكتاب تفسيراً أمثل لإشكالية الفلسفة في الفكر العربي الإسلامي، يكشف من خلاله عن حيوية وإبداع الفلاسفة العرب، غذ أن غنى وقيمة أي نظرية فلسفية يكمن في قدرتها على إحداث تغيير في تصوراتنا عن الوجود والعالم تكون به أكثر قدرة على مواجهة مشكلاتنا.
ويرى المؤلف أخيراً أن إشكالية التوحيد "المعقول والمنقول" في الخطاب الفلسفي العربي عرضية وليست تعبيراً عن عجز العقل العربي وإنما تشكل جزءاً مهما من هموم الفيلسوف.
