في روايته هذه يناقش "خالد المجحد" علاقة المثقف السعودي بالسلطة ويتطرق للمذهبية داخل المجتمع كما يسلط الأضواء على حقبة تحرك الخلايا الإرهابية داخل البلاد.
تحكي الرواية مسار حياة الشاب بدر الشراحي الذي انتقل من مدينة الإحساء إلى أفغانستان بعد أن تأثر بالفكر الجهادي ثم عاد بعد أن توقف الجهاد هناك ليجد نفسه غير قادر على التكيف مع المعطيات الجديدة لمجتمعه الأصلي وليتحول من ثم من أقصى اليمين إلى أقصى اليسار بصورة تدريجية ودراماتيكية. هذا التحول الجذري في سلوك الشراحي وتوجهاته العقائدية جعل المجتمع غير قادر على تقبله بهيئته وتركيبته الجديدة، الأمر الذي دفعه للإنتقال إلى مكان آخر للإنتقال إلى مكان آخر للعيش حيث لا يعرفه أحد وحيث يمكنه أن يبدأ حياة جديدة فكانت مدينة الجبيل الصناعية ميداناً آخر لمغامراته.
من جانب آخر تتعرض الرواية لمسألة العادات والتقاليد، وعلاقة الدين بالمجتمع، وبالسلطة السياسية.
وعليه، يكون "خالد المجحد" قدم عملاً روائياً أنيقاً بلغته، واقعياً بأحاديثه وأمكنته، مما حقق لقارئه متعة الحكاية والخطاب في آن معاً.
