"الألم في أبشع صورة يقيم في صدري كفيروس بدل شكله عشرات المرات يمتص لذة الحياة". هذا الكلام يجد الترجمة له في أحداث رواية (اسمي يوسف) بوقائعها وذكرياتها وبالعلاقات التي تقوم بين شخصياتها المختلفة.
تتحدث الرواية عن طفل كان في الثالثة من عمره عندما قرر زوجان لا ينجبان الأطفال بتبينه. كان يعيش في دار/ مدرسة تهتم بهكذا حالات. بعد فترة من الزمن ترزق أن يخرجه من حياتهما خوفاً على ابنته فيبدأ البطل بسرد حكايته وما يتعرض له من أحداث ومشكلات في مواجهة العالم وحيداً، فينطلق الحكي مع مارد الذكريات ليصوَر للقارئ هشاشة الفرد وضآلته في مواجهة مجتمع صارم وسلَم قيم لا يعكس إرادة الحياة.
يقول الروائي على لسان بطله: "... لعلها الحياة بكل أحداثها دفعتني لتحقيق مشروع يمكن أن يزرع البسمة مهما كان طعمها لشخص ما وفي النهاية سيكون في وضع أفضل مما كان عليه. هناك أمور لا يمكن النقاش حولها يجب أن تتخذ فيها قراراً وتنفذه إنها اللحظة الحاسمة التي تعيد الوضع إلى نصابه، الرحمة ليست في الحياة فقط ولكن في الموت أيضاً، هل يمكن أن نهدي الموت لأحدهم لأنه لا يستطيع فعل ذلك لنفسه؟
