تعتبر ظاهرة القيادة من الظواهر القديمة الحديثة، فلقد تم الإهتمام بها منذ القدم، وظهرت في ملاحم الأبطال، وفي انتصارات قادة الجيوش وفي رؤى الزعامات.
وتطورت مع تطور الفكر الإداري، فبدأ الإهتمام بضرورة القيادة لأنها أكثر تأثيراً من الإدارة، ولأن القادة يؤثرون بممارساتهم التي تعطي إهتماماً للعلاقات الإنسانية أكثر من إعتبارات العمل.
وتطورت خلال هذه الأفكار، نظريات القيادة التي ركزت في بادئ الأمر على السمات الشخصية للقادة، كالذكاء، الشجاعة، ... ، ثم انتقلت إلى السلوكيات، وحددت بذلك أنماطاً للقيادة، فإذا تعامل القائد بسلوكيات المشاركة، فهو ديمقراطي، وإذا اتسمت سلوكاته بإتخاذ القرار بصفة فردية والتعامل مع المرؤوسين بإصدار الأوامر فهو قائد أتوقراطي.
أما نظرية الموقف، فهي تشير إلى أن القائد لا يمكن أن يتبع نفس السلوك لكل المواقف، وهي تقصد أنه لا يوجد نمط واحد صالح لجميع المواقف، وهذه هي أبرز النظريات التقليدية في القيادة، لكن الرؤى تغيرت، والمحيط والمؤسسة تغيروا، فكان لا بد للقيادة أن تتغير، وعليه تطورت نظريات القيادة، وتضمنت في محتواها الرؤية المستقبلية، التغيير، القيم، المهارات.
والحقيقة أن المؤسسات المعاصرة أصبحت تواجه تحديات وضغوطات متزايدة ومعقدة، تؤثر بشكل كبير على أدائها، وتنافسيتها، نظراً للتغيرات التي مست مختلف الجوانب الإقتصادية، والتكنولوجية، والثقافة والإجتماعية وحتى السياسية.
هذه التغيرات جعلت العالم قرية صغيرة سهلت فيها وسائل الإعلام والإتصال إنتشار الثقافات المختلفة بين الدول وإنتقال المعلومة بسرعة فائقة.
لذا، كان على المؤسسات مواكبة ومواجهة هذه التحديات، فكما يقول "ديل روجرز": "حتى لو كنت على الدرب الصحيح، فإنه سيتم تجاوزك إذا بقيت جالساً مكانك، لأن الوقت يتغير بإستمرار، فالتغيير هو سمة هذا العصر.
