إن معرفة أسماء الله الحسنى وفهم معانيها والتعبّد لله بها، يقوّي الإيمان بالله تعالى ويحضّ على اتباع دينه والتزام شرائعه وسننه. فعلى المؤمن أن يبذل جهده وطاقته في معرفة الله بأسمائه وصفاته وأفعاله، من غير تعطيل ولا تمثل ولا تحريف ولا تكييف، بل تكون هذه المعرفة مستقاة من الكتاب والسنّة.
وقد وضع علماءُ الإسلام كتباً كثيرة في أسماء الله الحسنى وشرحها وبيان مدلولاتها؛ ومن أهم هذه الكتب "المقصد الأسنى في شرح أسماء الله الحسنى" للإمام الغزالي، وهو هذا الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته وفيه يجيب على سؤال ورده من أحد الأشخاص يطلب فيه شرح معاني الأسماء الحسنى. والكلام في الكتاب ينقسم بشكل عام إلى ثلاثة فنون هي: الفن الأول: في السوابق، والمقدمات وهو يشتمل على بيان حقيقة القول في الاسم والمسمى والتسمية، وكشف ما وقع فيه من الغلط لأكثر الفرق. وبيان أن ما يتقارب معناه من أسماء الله تعالى: كالعظيم، والكبر، والجليل، هل يجوز أن يحمل على معنى واحد، فتكون هذه الأسماء مترادفة، أم لا بد أن تختلف معانيها؟ وبيان أن الاسم الواحد الذي له معنيان، وهو مشترك بالإضافة إلى المعنيين، هل يحمل عليهما حمل العموم في مسمياته أم يتعين حمله على أحدهما؟ وبيان أن للعبد خطأ من معنى كل اسم من أسماء الله تعالى.
الفن الثاني: في المقاصد والغايات، ويشتمل هذا الفن على بيان معاني أسماء الله تعالى التسعة والتسعين. وبيان أن جملتها ترجع إلى ذات وسبع صفات عند أهل السنة. وبيان كيف أنها ترجع على مذهب المعتزلة والفلاسفة إلى ذات واحدة لا كثرة فيها.
الفن الثالث: في اللواحق والتكميلات؛ ويشتمل هذا الأخير على بيان أن أسماء الله تعالى تزيد على تسعة وتسعين توقيفاً. وبيان أن فائدة الإحصاء والتخصيص مائة إلا واحداً. وبيان الرخصة في جواز وصف الله سبحانه وتعالى بكل ما هو متصف به بمعناه.. من صفات المدح، وبكل ما هو متصف به بمعناه... من صفات المدح، وبكل ما لا يوهم معناه نقصاً. وإن لم يرد نص في هذا كله، ولا إذن، ولا توقيف، إذ لم يرد فيه منع...
