من المعلوم، أن السّيمَياء علم يهتم بدراسة أنظمة العلامات: اللغة، أنظمة الإشارات، التعليمات الخ .. وهذا التحديد يجعل جزءاً من السيمياء ناقصاً، لذلك بدأ (بيار غيرو) في كتابه "السّيمياء" بدراسة أنظمة العلامات غير الألسنية. وبمعنى آخر التأكيد على وجود نماذج إخرى من الإتصال صادرة هي الأخرى عن سيمياء وهي: الإتصال الحيواني، واتصال الآلات (سيبرنتيكا) واتصال الخلايا الحية.
وعلى هذا اعتبر المؤلف أن السيمياء لصفة الإمتداد التي تمتلكها ولأنها (ستكون العلم الذي يهتم بكل أنظمة العلامات) لن يسع الألسنيون أن يعالجوها تعليمياً إلا بعد أن يُعاد بناء هذه الأنظمة تجريبياً.
ولتوضيح الصورة أكثر عمل المؤلف على وضع مقدمة عرض خلالها لمحات عن طبيعة وشكل ووظيفة العلامات مفنداً رأي كل عالِم ومفهومه للسيمياء ومنهم "سوسور"، والأمريكي ش.س.بيرس، وآخرون بهدف الوصول إلى نظرية عامة للعلامة. بعد ذلك تطرق الكتاب في مختلف فصوله إلى الحديث عن العلامات العلمية، والعلامات التقنية، والإجتماعية والجمالية مع الشرح والأمثلة ...
