يجد القارئ في هذا الكتاب الأوراق التي قدمت لمؤتمر تجديد الخطاب الديني الذي إنعقد على مدرج جامعة دمشق بالتعاون بين مركز الدراسات الإسلامية ومركز الدراسات الإستراتيجية بجامعة دمشق وذلك خلال الفترة 10-12/شباط/2004 م، تحت عنوان: إدع إلى سبيل ربك بالحكمة والموعظمة الحسنة وجادلهم بالتي هي أحسن. كان المؤتمر في الواقع مناسبة لطرح شجون تجديد الخطاب الإسلامي، وقد توزعت محاور الحديث حول عدد من المسائل التي يثيرها خطاب التجديد الإسلامي، وفق المحاور التالية: المحور الاول: دواعي وشرعية إصلاح الخطاب الديني وعلاقته بحركات الإصلاح الديني. المحور الثاني: بنية الخطاب الديني الإصلاحي: مفهوم التجديد، وأسئلة الخطاب الديني الجديد، وصلته بأشكال الخطاب الديني الأخرى وآفاق الحوار الإسلامي المسيحي. المحور الثالث: التجديد، قضايا التراث والحداثة، محددات العلاقة. المحور الرابع: قضايا التجديد: دور الخطاب الإسلامي الجديد في حل إشكاليات الخطاب الديني. المحور الخامس: صورة الإسلام في الغرب بعد 11 أيلول، ودور خطاب التجديد في تغيير الصورة الفكرية والإعلامية. المحور السادس: نقد الخطاب الإسلامي الجديد ومستقبل خطاب الإصلاح الديني: إستشراف. وقد هدف المؤتمر إلى دراسة التجديد كظاهرة إجتماعية، ولذلك فقد شارك فيه باحثون من داخل المؤسسة الدينية ومن خارجها، وقد عكس ذلك بوضوح أن الإصلاح في الحقل الديني ليس مسؤولية فئة محددة، بل هو مسؤولية المجتمع بأسره. وقد أكد المؤتمر في بيانه الختامي على ضرورة الحفاظ على الثوابت الدينية القومية والوطنية، وإعتبار التجديد أفقاً يسعى إليه الجميع ضمن دائرة المتغيرات، مع إحياء دور الثوابت في المحافظة على قيم الأمة وتاريخها. ومن نافلة القول أن ما قدم في هذا المؤتمر بكل تفاصيله إنما يعكس رؤى قائليه وتجاوبهم، ولا يلزم أياً من المركزين المنظمين للمؤتمر.
