لم يبق ميدان في قطاع بحوث العمليات إلا تم التطرق له بمختلف اقسامه (البرمجة الخطية، نقل الشبكات، صفوف الانتظار....الخ) بل وبذلت وما زالت تقدم الجهود العلمية الحقيقية على تطوير هذا الحقل المعرفي على مستوى الجامعات ومراكز البحث ،واستخدمت أساليب رياضية واحصائية وحاسوبية متطورة للارتقاء بمستوى هذا العلم ولاستيعاب ما تم انجازه في هذا الحقل نظريا وتطبيقيا يستوجب على الباحث أن تتوفر له الحدود الدنيا من المعرفة بمجالات :الرياضيات والاحصاء وعلم الحاسوب،وهذه تشكل نقطة ضعف كبيرة لدى أعداد كبيرة من دارسينا. هذا الكتاب (المدخل) جاء ليعالج هذه المشكلة دون اخلال بأسلوب مبسط وهو لا يحتوي على كل ما درس في بحوث العمليات ، فكرا وتطبيقا ، بل هو بدايات على الطريق ولمن أراد التعمق أكثر سيجد وبالأخص في المصادر الأجنبية مثاله ومبتغاه. احتوى الفصل الأول من المدخل على البرمجة الخطية التي اشتملت على طريقة الرسم البياني وطريقة السميلكش ثم شبكات النقل والتعيين،أما الفصول الأخرى فقد احتوت على شبكات الأعمال،تحليل القرار ،نماذج التخزين،صفوف الانتظار،ونظرية المباريات، وقد تم استخدام أحد البرامج الجاهزة وهو (Dss ) في تطبيقات البرمجة الخطية وبعض التطبيقات في البرمجة الاجمالية بالقدر الذي يسمح به هذا البرنامج وفي نهاية كل من الفصول سنجد تطبيقات لهذا البرنامج.
