تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى إعطاء صورة واضحة وجليّة للحياة الإجتماعية في بلاد الشام في عهد المماليك الجراكسة في فترة زمنية قاربت القرن وثلثه وامتدت من الربع الأخير للقرن الثامن للهجرة / الرابع عشر الميلادي إلى الربع الأول من القرن العاشر الهجري / السادس عشر الميلادي.
ونظراً لعناية الباحثين في تاريخ بلاد الشام بالجوانب السياسية والعسكرية بشكل عام، وبعدهم عن دراسة الجانب الإجتماعي بشكل خاص عمد الباحث إلى تسليط الضوء على هذا الجانب في محاولة منه إلى الإسهام بدراسة تاريخ المنطقة في فترة تاريخية كثرت فيها حركات التمرد والعصيان والمحاولات الإنفصالية التي قادها بعض النواب والولاة المماليك في بلاد الشام وإنتشار الفساد، وظاهرة البذل والرشوة لشراء المناصب حتى الدينية منها ولا سيما القضاء، فضلاً عن أن هذه المدة الزمنية لم يتم تناولها بشكل مفصل.
تختلف دراسة الحياة الإجتماعية إلى حد كبير عن دراسة الجوانب السياسية والعسكرية التي تتميز بالتغيير والتبديل وعدم الإستقرار، في حين أن النشاطات الإجتماعية تتصف بشيء من الثبات والبطئ الشديدين في التغيير.
لذا، فقد وجد الباحث نفسه مضطراً إلى اللجوء إلى بعض المصادر المتقدمة أو المتأخرة قليلاً عن العصر الذي يبحث فيه لإستكمال الصورة الناقصة أو العثور على حلقة مفقودة، وإن كان إستعمال هذه المصادر يتطلب الحذر والحيطة.
