عندما يريد المؤرخ أن يكتب عن فترة ما من فترات التاريخ، فإن أول شيء يواجهه، هو المصدر الذي يجب أن يستقى منه مادته التاريخية للفترة التي يؤرخ لها، وقد تتعدد هذه المصادر، وتتباين بين الصحة والزيف، والصدق والكذب، فتصعب مهمة المؤرخ في رحلة بحثه عن الحقيقة.
وقد حرص بعض الذين كتبوا ويكتبون تاريخ الأنبياء والرسل وتاريخ الأمم السابقة، على إستبعاد القرآن الكريم او سنّة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من بين المصادر التي يعتمد عليها، كما يحرص البعض الآخر على التشكيك في أية رواية تاريخية تعتمد على القرآن الكريم أو السنّة الشريفة، ويحدث ذلك كله في الوقت الذي يعتمد فيقه هؤلاء الكتاب على التوراة والتلمود والشروح العبرانية والإنجيل، ويجعلونها من مصادرهم المعتمدة.
إن القرآن الكريم هو أصح الكتب السماوية وغير السماوية الموجودة على وجه الأرض على الإطلاق، ولا يأتيه الباطل من بين يديه ولا من خلفه تنزيل من حكيم حميد، وهو أساس التشريع الإسلامي ومصدره الأول، وهو مصدر تاريخي مهم، يعرض لنا الأزمة الغابرة والعصور المندثرة - التي هي في نظر الغافلين عبارة عن وادٍ من عدم سحيق ومقبرة مدرسة - في صورة حية تتفجر عبراً ودروساً.
وتأتي السنة النبوية في المرتبة الثانية بعد القرآن الكريم، فهي زاخرة بالنصوص التاريخية الكثيرة التي تمتلئ بها كتب الأحاديث، ولم يكثر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من الأحاديث التي تتناول أخبار الماضي فقط، بل أكثر من ذكر الأحاديث التي تتناول الأخبار التاريخية المستقبلية أو ما يعرف بالغيبيات.
فقد كان للتاريخ مكانة كبيرة عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم تمثلت في غزارة نتاجه صلى الله عليه وسلم من الأحاديث التاريخية، بل إنه صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يكرر القصة الواحدة أكثر من مرة وفي المجالس المتعددة، ولم يقف الأمر عند هذا الحد، بل بلغ التاريخ من الشرف، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لم يكن يقصه على مستمعيه فقط، بل كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يجب أن يستمع إلى التاريخ من غيره، ويطلب أن يقص عليه فإذا ما حدث بأي شيء عن التاريخ، كان صلى الله عليه وسلم يسرع في تبليغ ذلك إلى من لم يسمعه من عامة المسلمين.
