ليس التسويق شيئا يختص به دارس علوم التجارة وحده, و إنما تمس كل حياة كل إنسان، فكل منا عضو في المجتمع بحركة التسويق, فالشراء والبيع ومشاهدة الإعلانات التجارية في التلفزيون في الصحف وملصقات الشوارع هي مثال ذلك, وكل منا يزور متاجر عديدة و يتعامل معها ويقارن أسعارها بأسعار غيرها, ويتعامل مع بائعين مختلفين, و يشتري سلعا بعضها محلية و أخرى أجنبية, وممارسة هذه الأعمال يلعب الإنسان دوراً مهما في النظام التسويقي, و من ثم يعرف شيئاً عن هذا النظام.,وعلى الرغم من ممارسة الإنسان لبعض التصرفات التسويقية و مشاركته في النظام التسويقي, فإنه قد لا يدرك ذلك, و قد لا يدرك معنى كلمة التسويق و لا مكانه و أهميته في حياته, و لا كيفية إدارة الأنشطة التسويقية.,لم تعد مشكلة عالم اليوم أن ينتج المصنع السلعة, ولكن أصبحت المشكلة " كيف يكون هذا المصنع قادراً على تسويقها",فهو إن لم ينجح في تسويقها أقفل بالتأكيد أبوابه, و كانت المشكلة فيما مضى إنتاجية, أما الآن فإن البقاء في السوق يعتمد أساسا على دراسة احتياجات المستهلك و توفيرها له بالمواصفات المطلوبة و في الزمان و المكان المناسبين وبالسعر الذي يقدر على تحمله.
