لقد كان ظهور الفن الروائي متزامناً مع ظهور المدينة الصناعية الحديثة، وامتاز هذا الفن بما امتازت به المدينة من تنوع وحراك وتعدد ومرونة، فصار الأقدر من بين الفنون الأدبية الأخرى على التعبير عن تركيبتها وطبيعتها، وأصبحت دراسة الصلة بين هاتين المفردتين (المدينة) و(الرواية) ضرورة في مجال النقد الأدبي الحديث، وموضوعاً جدلياً من موضوعات السرد.
ومن هنا، تبرز أهمية هذه الدراسة التي تأتي في هذا الوقت تحديداً مع الإنتشار الواسع للرواية السعودية ومع التحول الكبير المتسارع في بنية المجتمع السعودي وفي المدينة السعودية بوصفها حاضناً بيئياً لشريحة كبيرة من هذا المجتمع.
يتجه هذا البحث للكشف عن مدى حضور المدينة في الرواية السعودية منقباً عن صورها الواقعية والرومانسية، ومستجلياً أثرها على بنية الرواية وعناصرها الفنية بواسطة منهج تحليلي نقدي، يتناول النصوص الروائية التي تم اختيارها كنماذج يرى أنها تشي -بشكل واضح- بالعلاقة بين المدينة والرواية وتأثر كل منهما بالآخر إضافة إلى الاضطلاع بالتعريف بالمصطلحات والمفاهيم التي نهضت عليها الدراسة.
