في بلدان كثيرة من العالم يعيش المسيحيون والمسلمون جنباً إلى جنب. ولا يمكنهم إلا أن يعيشوا في الاحترام المتبادل والتعاون على البرّ والخير. ولبنان الذي شهد في السنوات الأخيرة حرباً أهلية كانت في معظمها حرب الآخرين على أرض لبنان وتحولت بعض فصولها إلى حرب دينية بين المسيحيين والمسلمين، قد أدرك أبناؤه أهمية توضيح موقفهم من التعايش المسيحي الإسلامي. فكثرت الندوات والمنشورات حول العيش معاً. وكان السينودس لأجل لبنان الذي دعا إليه قداسة البابا يوحنا بولس الثاني، بهدف توضيح موقف الكنيسة الكاثوليكية من العلاقات بين المسيحيين والمسلمين، واختصر قداسته هذا الموقف بقوله الشهير: لبنان ليس مجرد وطن، إنه رسالة للشرق والغرب معاً، رسالة تعايش وتعاون بين أديان مختلفة.
والمقالات المنشورة في هذا الكتاب تدخل في إطار هذه الدعوة إلى تأكيد الاحترام بين المسيحية والإسلام وتوطيد علاقات التعاون بين المسيحيين والمسلمين لبناء أوطان جديرة بكرامة الإنسان وبحقوقه.
في القسم الأول، عرض لبعض الوثائق الرسمية التي صدرت من قبل المسؤولين في الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، والتي تدل على نهج جديد تبنته الكنيسة الكاثوليكية من بعد المجمع الفاتيكاني الثاني (1962-1965)، وهو نهج انفتاح على سائر الأديان وتعاون معها.
وفي القسم الثاني توضيح لبعض الأمور في الحوار اللاهوتي بين المسيحية والإسلام، بغية تقريب وجهات النظر بين عقائد الديانتين. المسيحية والإسلام سوف يبقيان ديانتين مختلفتين، والحوار اللاهوتي لا يهدف إلى إلغاء ما بينهما من اختلافات.
القسم الثالث وهو بعنوان "كلمات في التقارب المسيحي الإسلامي"، والقسم الرابع وهو بعنوان "كلمات في مناسبات وطنية جامعة" يحتويان على كلمات ألقاها المطران "كيرلس سليم بسترس" في مناسبات دينية واجتماعية جمعت مسلمين ومسيحيين، عمل فيها على إظهار الأمور الإيجابية المشتركة بين الديانتين، وعلى نشر روح المحبة والتعاون بين المسلمين والمسيحيين.
