اللغة في نظرنا، تنظيم قواعد بالغ التعقيد وينجم عنه توليد مجموعة جمل لا متناهية. وليست اللغة، بالتالي، لائحة جمل يصفها الألسني. لذلك لا بد من أن تساهم النظرية الألسنية والدراسات المتعمقة الجارية في إطارها، في وصف قواعد هذا التنظيم وتفسيرها. ففي الواقع، لا تتخذ النظرية مبرراتها، بالنسبة لنا، ولا تكون فعالة ما لم نقرنها بالتطبيق الواضح والمفيد في قضايا لغتنا. وقد قام اللغويون بدراسات في مجال اللغة، وهذه الدراسات وإن كانت تساعدنا على فهم بعض القضايا اللغوية؛ إلا أنها لم تعد تفي، في الحقيقة، في مجال تحليل اللغة. ففي هذا المجال، تكون النظريات الألسنية العلمية الحديثة، في نظرنا، التقنية المتطورة التي نتسلح بها لسير قضايا اللغة وتفسيرها وتوضيحها.
وما يشجعنا، في نهجنا هذا، هو أن اللغويين الأوائل، قد حللوا اللغة من منطلقات علمية بالإمكان اعتبارها متطورة جداً بالنسبة لعصرهم. مما يبين لنا أن المفاهيم الألسنية المتطورة ليست دخيلة على التراث اللغوي العربي فالمطلوب الآن هو إعادة النظر مجدداً في طرائق التحليل اللغوي العربي على ضوء التطور العلمي الحاصل في مجال الألسنية الحديثة، والسعي إلى إيجاد ألسنية عربية تغدو قادرة على تفهم قضايانا اللغوية، ووضع الأسس السليمة والعلمية لدراسة لغتنا وتحليلها.
وهذا الكتاب يأتي في هذا الإطار إذ يقدم فيه المؤلف الدكتور "ميشال زكريا" قواعد الجملة العربية انطلاقاً من النظرية التوليدية والتحويلية. ويمثل الكتاب محاولة أولى في مجال استقراء أكبر عدد من قواعد اللغة العربية تمكن المؤلف من التوصل إليها. وهو موجه إلى الطلاب الذين ما زالوا يتابعون تخصصهم في مجال اللغة العربية وإلى كل من يتعامل مع قضايا اللغة.
