في زمان حيث شهد فيه العرب حالة مأساوية يسودها الجهل والاستبداد والتخلف والفقر لم يكن فرح انطون بعيدا عن كل ما يحدث، وهو كرمز من رموز التجديد، استوعب تجارب من سبقوه من الإصلاحيين، كالعطار والطهطاوي... وعاصر أفذاذاً كباراً كالأفغاني والكواكبي وخير الدين التونسي ومحمد عبده ورشيد رضا وغيرهم، ممن أشبعوا موضوع النهوض من هذا الركود والانحطاط تفكيراً ومعالجة، ولكنه أنكر على هؤلاء، برغم تفاوت آرائهم أو تقاربها، أن تكون العودة إلى الأصول هي طريق الخلاص، كما أنكر من جهة أخرى، على من اعتبروا أن العلم وحده بمعناه الدقيق هو النقلة النوعية المثلى إلى النهضة والمعاصرة والمدخل الصحيح إلى الحل.
وفي هذا الكتاب إطلالة على أعمال هذا المفكر النهضوي الذي إلتمع فكره في قضايا التجديد الاجتماعي والسياسي في عصره حيث تبين هذه الدراسة ما لفرح انطون من باع طويل في إيجاد حل للمشاكل الاجتماعية والسياسية السائدة آنذاك، وذلك على ضوء استعراضي لما كتبه فرح في جامعته من بحوث، وما دبجه قلمه من روايات متميزة دل على مهارة في الرصد، وحذاقة في درس الظواهر السياسية والاجتماعية في أيامه مما جعله أحد الرواد الأوائل في أدبيات علم الاجتماع السياسي.
وقبل الإحاطة بما للخطاب "السوسيوسياسي" عند فرح انطون كان للباحث جولة فكرية ذات سمة تاريخية على الحركة الفكرية في عصر النهضة مستعرضاً وبعد تعريفه ذلك المصطلح، الطروحات النهضوية مبيناً الخريطة الثقافية قبل فرح انطون وأيامه مكرساً لبحوث فرح انطون الفكرية في الجامعة ولأعماله الروائية والمسرحية، ولخطابه الاجتماعي والسياسي مساحة واسعة، كان همه فيها إلقاء الضوء على هذا الفكر النهضوي المتنور الرائد.
