كان الشعراء عبر كل عصر وفي كل زمن هم أقدر الناس على تصوير الموت والفجيعة به، وتلونت أشعارهم فيه بألوان تتناسب مع الأزمان والمواقف، حتى لتكاد هذه الأشعار بعمقها واتساعها تكون سجلاً للأمم ولحقبها المختلفة ولرجالاتها وأهم مواقفهم وأعمالهم وصفاتهم.
والأمة العربية أكثر أمم الأرض ميلاً للشعر واحتفالاً به. وبالشعر تخاطبوا وتعارفوا وسجلوا معظم العلوم والفنون، وصوروا آلامهم وآمالهم، ونسجوا خيالاتهم وأحلامهم. وكان لهم مع الموت أبعاد ورؤى اختلاف وتعددن قبل الإسلام وبعده. فقالوا فيه ما يبكي ونظموا حوله ما يشفي ويريح النفس والفؤاد. وجعلوه في بعض الأحيان غاية تتطهر به الروح وترتقي.
لذلك فإن شعر الرثاء العربي جاء بتنوع هذه المفاهيم فمنه ما نسج ليستزرف الدمع ويثير الوجدان ويحرك الأفئدة رثاء وبكاء على الراحلين. ومنه ما قصد به الشاعر إبراز محاسن الميت وتسجيل أمجاده وأعماله إبقاء لذكراه وتخليداً لها وحثاً على الإقتداء بها والسير على نهجها. وعرف ذلك بالتأبين. ومنه ما ينطلق به الشاعر إلى ما وراء الموت مستلهماً حقيقة الحياة الخالدة ومصوراً أبعاد هذه الحياة الدنيا وموقف الإنسان منها، وما يمكن أن يكون له أو عليه. وهو بذلك يعزي نفسه أو غيره ممن وقعت بهم مصيبة الموت أو دارت عليهم دورته.
وقد حاولت أن أقتطف بعضاً من هذه البحور الزاخرة بهذا الفن من الرثاء وأن أقدمها عبر عصور العربية المختلفة في ثوب من اليسر والسهولة بعيداً عن الإغراق في الشرح والتحليل والموازنة، وإنما بتصوير للحدث وموقف الشاعر منه، وما جادت به قريحته فيه. محاولاً-قدر المستطاع-أن أربط بين الأثر النفسي عند الشاعر وبين ما يهدف إليه من استنهاضه للعزائم والهمم، وقدرته على تحقيق هذا الهدف من خلال النصوص التي تمثل ذلك من بين أشعاره المختلفة. وكان حرصي شديداً على أن تكون النصوص المختارة كثيرة ومتنوعة، مع محاولة عدم الإطالة بعرض مقطوعات مطولة إلا فيما يفرضه الموقف، ويقتضيه ترابط المعاني.
