جاء هذا الكتاب الذي وسمته بــ "العروض التطبيقي" دانياً من عقول الطلبة وأفهامهم، وتوخيت فيه السهولة واليسر، وإيجاز قواعده، وكثرة شواهده المحلولة وغير المحلولة، عرضتها بأسلوب شائق جميل حتى يقبل الذين يتهيّبون العروض على قراءته، والإفادة منه.
وأمّا الهدف الذي من أجله وُضع الكتاب فهو: إدراك العلاقة التلازمية بين الشّعر والموسيقى، وإتقان قراءة النص الشعري قراءة صحيحة، وإدراك مواطن الخلل، وإكساب الطلبة مهارة التقطيع الشعري، وتحديد التفعيلات، ووصف أحوالها، وتفهم حركة الشعر الحديث، وإعتمادها على تفعيلات الخليل بن أحمد، وتعّرف القافية، ونوعيها، وحركاتها، وحروفها، وتحديدها عند كلّ من الخليل، والأخفش.
وأمّا الخصائص التي يحملها هذا الكتاب، فمنها: بسط قواعد علمي العروض والقافية بسطاً وظيفياً تطبيقياً بعيداً عن القواعد النظرية، والمصطلحات الكثيرة التي لا وجود لها في وقتنا الحاضر، والحرص الشديد على إزالة جفاف وصعوبة هذا العلم الذي ينفرد منه الطلبة، وإبراز الشواهد على كلّ بحر حتى يسهل فهمه وهضمه.
وكذا إبراز التمرينات المحاولة عقب كلّ بحر أو عنوان، ليسهل تطبيق هذه المادة، والإنصراف عن كثير من المصطلحات، والكتاب يزدحم بالأسئلة التطبيقية، كي ترسخ قواعد هذا العلم في الذهن، كما وضعنا ملاحق في آخر الكتاب تتضمن جداول بالمصطلحات العروضية، ومصطلحات القافية - للمعرفة فقط - وألواناً من الأسئلة المختلفة والمتنوعة تشمل موضوعات العروض كلّها، منها ما هو محلول، وآخر غير محلول.
يأتي هذا الكتاب لينضم إلى كتب كثيرة في هذا المجال، كلّ منها له سمتُهُ وأسلوبه، وقد أفدت منها، ومن دواوين الشعر قديمها وحديثها، وذلك من أجل الغاية المنشودة منه.
